Private Spinal Surgery Canada
Can neurosurgery reduce my back pain?
One of the causes of severe back pain is disc degeneration. Discs are the jelly-like “cushions” that lie between the vertebrae, absorbing impact and stopping the vertebrae from rubbing each other. When these discs become worn or start to push out you will feel pain. If this happens you are said to have a slipped disc, a herniated disc or degenerative disc disease.
If this occurs, doctors usually recommend treating the herniation first with rest, physiotherapy and medication or injection. But if these methods fail to provide enough relief, then several types of neurosurgery may help. Simply click on whichever procedure you are in need of to learn more.

Discectomy
What is a discectomy?
A discectomy is the removal of all or part of a disc. This can be done in two different ways. Open discectomy is usually performed while you’re under general anesthetic. In some cases the surgeon may have to remove some bone and ligaments in order to get access to the damaged disc without hurting the surrounding nerve tissue. This is called a laminectomy or laminotomy depending on how much bone is removed. The surgeon will then remove the part of the disc that is protruding and any other disc fragments that may have escaped. Nothing is used to replace the disc that is removed.
Your neurosurgeon can discuss all your options with you and help you make the best decision.

Spinal Fusion
What is spinal fusion surgery?
Spinal fusion surgery is designed to decrease the movement between the two vertebrae, and this, in turn, may decrease your pain.
Before recommending spinal fusion your doctor will want to ensure that other treatments have been ineffective, other causes of back pain (such as osteoarthritis or muscle strain) have been ruled out, and the specific disc with the problem has been clearly identified.
